What support is available for staff?

Covering Your Tracks
You may not want others to know that you’ve been searching for information or help from websites such as Victim Support.  When you browse the internet on a mobile phone, tablet or computer, you leave a `history’ trail of pages and sites you’ve visited.   It’s impossible to completely avoid being tracked online but if you’re worried about someone knowing which sites you’ve been looking at, there are some things you can do to help cover your tracks online.  

Support within the University 

You may wish to report what has happened to your Line Manager, your Head or Director or to HR

If you decide to contact the Police about an incident that happened on campus or that relates to a member of staff or student, please remember to inform the University following the formal internal route set out in the Dignity and Respect policy. 

Incidents on social media
Hate incidents can occur in any setting; social media channels are an obvious source.  If you are being or have been trolled or experience hate crime through social media, the University’s social media guidelines offer advice and support. 

Report your experience on this Report + Support site
Report using contact details on this site to be linked to a trained responder who will get in touch using the channel you request, within 5 working days.  Your responder will not try to influence or instruct you, they will help you think through your options so that you decide what (if anything) you want to do next.

Making a report with contact details via the University of Sussex Report + Support Tool connects you with a responder and will not, in itself, open a formal complaint.  See our FAQs for more information on raising a grievance. 
 
Support services for staff 
Support services are provided through Health Assured who offer a helpline that can link enquirers to counselling, information, resources and referrals to local services.  The service is open 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  The support offered is confidential and independent of the University.  The University receives data on the number and broad themes of enquiries made to Health Assured, but no personal data or information on the detail of enquiries is shared. 

When you are ready, you may find that the wellbeing hub can help you find other support within the University as well as self care resources. 

Dignity and Respect Champions
The University has recruited volunteer Dignity and Respect Champions in a range of roles across Sussex.  Champions offer a confidential listening space where staff can explore the options open to them.  Champions are also able to signpost to additional sources of help.  To be connected with a Champion, please complete the online request form.  You will be matched with the first available Champion who will arrange an initial meeting. 

Trade Unions 
There are 3 campus trade unions that the university recognises: Unite, Sussex UCU and Unison.  If you are a member of these unions, you can contact them for advice and support. 

External sources of support 

Tell MAMA (anti-Muslim hate crime)
Tell MAMA is an independent organisation which works on tackling anti-Muslim hatred by measuring Anti-Muslim Attacks (MAMA).  You can record an incident via an online report, call on 0800 456 1226 or email: info@tellmamauk.org. 

Community Security Trust (anti-Semitic hate crime)
Community Security Trust (CST) is a charity that protects British Jews from antisemitism and related threats.  You can record an incident an online report, call on their 24 hour national emergency line: 0800 032 3263 or email: incidents@cst.org.uk 

Galop (anti LGBTQ+ hate crime)
Galop is an LGBT+ charity that offer support to people who experience hate crime.  You can call the helpline on: 020 7704 2040, email: HateCrime@galop.org.uk or make an online report

Stop Hate UK (all hate crime)
Stop Hate UK is a national organisation that provides independent, confidential and accessible reporting and support for victims, witnesses and third parties of all forms of hate crime and discrimination based on any aspect of an individual’s identity.  You can call the Stop Hate Crime 24 hour helpline: 0800 138 1625, email: talk@stophate.org or make an online report

It happened to someone I know 

Hearing someone we know tell us about their experience of hate incidents is likely to be distressing.  We want to help, but we often don’t know how.  The first and most important thing we can do is listen without judging.  Giving someone else the time to share their experience may be their first step to changing their situation and they have chosen us to talk to because they believe we can hear and support. 

What can I do?
On this page you will find a range of support that may be useful to the person you are trying to help, at a time that is right for them.  If this person is a member of staff or student, then they may find it helpful to know that they can make a report online on this site. 

Taking care of yourself
The experience of hearing someone describe a situation involving hate incidents may not only be painful, it may trigger memories or thoughts of other experiences for you.  Remember that the sources of support on this page are there for you too.
